If not using meter daily/weekly/(monthly?) take out batteries and put in zip lock bag. See leak inside bag throw whole bag. If look good in bag, but batteries dead new batteries reuse bag.
Replace batteries as a set. (would you believe I've seen people replace 1 or 2 in a set of 4 (or 1 of 2) to get their (whatever) device working again? They think saves money on batteries, but new batteries "pushing" old backwards (after completely discharged) kills new ones faster and makes leak more likely (vs. dying gracefully).
