Straight line spacing
Found comment that on prototype anything over 12 feet wide can only move in special train service, by itself. And a separate note that maximum width of rolling stock is 12 feet. Different standards state less.
15 feet was mentioned as standard spacing, some places now requiring more. Narrower looks better on models because distance is not to scale. Half maximum width on one car/bogee (6 feet) plus half maximum width of car/bogee on next line is 12 feet. That leaves 3 feet of clearance if line center-to-center 15 feet.
15 feet * 12 = 180 inches
180 inches * 25.4 - 4572mm
4572mm / 148 = 30.89mm
4572mm / 150 = 30.48mm
4572mm / 160 = 28.575mm
Using 31mm spacing gives 180.63 prototype inches if using 148 scale, and 195.276 prototype inches if using 160 scale. (For reference, I saw 1.25 inches mentioned multiple times for N scale spacing, that is 31.75mm.)
